Steven I. Hanish, M.D., Joins MUSC; Named Division Chief of Transplant Surgery

Prabhakar Baliga, M.D., Chair of the Department of Surgery, is excited to announce Steven I. Hanish, M.D., has been named the new Chief of Transplant Surgery, effective June 10, 2024. Dr. Hanish is a distinguished transplant surgeon who joins us from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School (UTSW), where he is a Professor of Surgery, Surgical Director of Adult Liver Transplantation, and Director of the Living Donor Liver Transplant Program.

 

Dr. Hanish began his career at Emory University Hospital in 2009 as a liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon and director of the multidisciplinary liver tumor board. He was then recruited in 2013 to the University of Maryland School of Medicine as an associate professor of surgery and director of hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he helped Maryland’s liver transplant program become the third-largest liver transplant program in the United States. He joined UTSW in 2018 to grow the liver transplant program and institute a living donor liver transplant program.

 

At MUSC, Dr. Hanish will enhance the transplant division’s clinical programs, creating collaborative approaches to grow MUSC’s solid organ transplant program and expand the mutli-disciplinary approach of the patients with end-stage organ disease in South Carolina. He will also serve MUSC Health as Chief of the Transplant Integrated Center of Excellence (ICCE), working closely with all leaders and staff in the Transplant ICCE to grow these key clinical areas.

 

Dr. Hanish earned his medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery at Duke University School of Medicine, where he also completed a Research Fellowship. He then completed a multi-visceral abdominal transplant fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.

 

He specializes in complex surgeries of the liver and hepatobiliary surgery. He has expertise in the surgical management of both primary and metastatic diseases to the liver. He has a special interest in transplant oncology,  as well as living donor liver surgery. He received specialty training at ASAN medical center, Seoul, Korea and has a track record of excellent donor and recipient outcomes.

 

Dr. Hanish’s research endeavors focus on liver failure and liver transplant. In addition, he serves on the editorial board of Transplantation Reviews and is an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Surgical Research, Journal of Surgical Oncology, and Liver Transplantation.

 

He is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, the American Society of Transplantation and the Society of University Surgeons.
