Yolonda Colson, M.D. Ph.D. to Speak at the 2021 AATS Foundation Gardner Lectureship

Dr. Yolonda Colson will give a talk: The Surgeon and Engineer Meet at Dinner on Tuesday, November 16, as the invited speaker for the AATS Foundation Gardner Lectureship. Dr. Colson is the current Vice President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, having served in many roles since becoming a member in 2003, including as Co-chair of the 2015 Annual Meeting and Chair of the Advisory Council for the AATS Foundation. She is the Chief for the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Hermes C. Grillo Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Read Dr. Colson's full biography.

About the AATS Foundation Gardner Lectureship

The Gardner Lectureship has been established by mentees, colleagues, and friends of Dr. Gardner to honor his career as a nationally-recognized cardiac surgeon and leader in cardiovascular medicine. This lectureship brings a prominent AATS member lecturer an ACGME-approved cardiothoracic surgery residency institution. Sponsored and administered by the AATS Foundation, the lectureship provides an annual award of up to $10,000 to an institution with specific educational needs.

Carla Pugh, M.D., Ph.D. Speaks at Claude Organ Visiting Lecture

Dr. Carla Pugh, M.D., Ph.D., invited lecturer, gave the talk “Signatures: What Can Sensors and Motion Tracking Tell Us About Surgical Performance?” at the 2017 Claude Organ Lecture on Tuesday, May 16. Dr. Pugh is Professor of Surgery and Vice-Chair of Education and Patient Safety at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Her clinical specialty is Acute Care Surgery. Dr. Pugh is nationally recognized for her research on the use of simulation technology to assess and quantitatively define hands on clinical skills. Dr. Pugh is the developer of several decision-based simulators that are currently used to assess intra-operative judgment and team skills. In 2011, Dr. Pugh received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Claude H. Organ, Jr., M.D. was a leading general surgeon and educator. Dr. Organ was dedicated to mentoring young surgeons and committed to encouraging and maintaining diversity in the field of surgery. Throughout his career, he fought tirelessly for the inclusion of more African Americans, other minorities and women in the training and practice of surgery.
